The City Hall, or Palazzo Comunale in Italian, is the historical building that is the city council of Bologna, located to the west of Palazzo Maggiore. The palace is also known as Palazzo D’Accursio. It is a very old and important public palace for the city. The effects of 15th century architecture can be seen in the palace, which has been in existence since 1336.
The statue of Pope Gregory 8, built in 1580 at the main entrance gate, will attract your attention. You can see collections of paintings, sculptures and special items from the 13th and 19th centuries in the palace. Since the square where the City Hall is located is the most beautiful square in Bolgona, both the palace and the museums inside and the square attract a lot of tourists.
Bologna Town Hall
The Town Hall, also known as Palazzo d’Accursio, is located in Square Maggiore. It was used as the town hall until 2008. Used for municipal affairs since 1336, the building is now a museum. The design of the additions and arrangements made to the palace in the 15th and 16th centuries has changed from there to the present day. The grand staircase at the entrance, built by Donato Bramante in the 16th century, was designed to take the horses into the palace and take them up to the 1st floor.
Hz. Mary and St. One of the Madonna and Child works, in which Jesus is depicted, is located in this palace. This 15th-century decoration was removed in 1796, but some of it remains in its former place and some is on display in the exhibition on the 2nd floor. When you enter from the side where the Neptune Fountain is located, you can reach the Salamarket part of the palace. It used to be the city’s stock exchange. At the entrance on this side, there are also botanical and medicinal herb gardens built in the 16th century.
